Hien Nguyen

Bio

Hien Nguyen (she/her) is a Best of the Net nominated speculative fiction writer who writes about Vietnamese ghosts, monsters, and mythology. She is interested in the uplifting and haunting forms of human connection, and how the speculative can lay those bare. Hien’s work has been published by Invisible City, Fahmidan Journal, and others. She is a mentor for WriteGirl & Round Table Mentor, a member of the Codex Writers Group, and a 2024 Roots. Wounds. Words. Writer’s Retreat Fellow. Hien’s debut young adult novel, TWIN TIDES, is forthcoming in Fall 2025 from Delacorte Press (Random House Children's Books).

An indoor cat disguised as a human, Hien enjoys bird watching with her significant other, binging Asian variety shows, and absorbing hot pot broth like a sponge. Born in the Midwest, Hien has ping-ponged across coasts but is currently based in the South. She is represented by Katelyn Detweiler at Jill Grinberg Literary Management

I’ll be looking at all of the adult & YA fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and everything speculative. I will also be taking a look at any literary or literary adjacent projects. I'm a genre-blend writer at heart, and want to support projects that also exist in this fuzzy space. I am drawn primarily to voice and atmosphere (things like plot or worldbuilding can be figured out during revision). I also would love to look at experimental projects or projects that toe the line of what is "acceptable" in genre and/or literary work.

I’m open minded to many different types of projects. Books that contain graphic depictions of SA or death might be more difficult, but I want to impress are not absolutely off the table for me. The world can be violent, and text that critically engages with this violence are important, especially from historically excluded voices. That said, if your project features these things I would love mutual grace and understanding in how to navigate revisions.
